Residents and landowners in the Upper Iowa Watershed are invited to a public open house Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Cresco United Methodist Church, co-hosted by Cresco Public Library.

"People are increasingly familiar with the concept of a watershed -- we all understand what it means to live upstream or downstream," said Megan Buckingham, Watershed Outreach Coordinator for Northeast Iowa RC&D. "What many of us don't yet realize is the power we have as individuals and in our communities to prevent flooding, reduce its impact, and keep our water clean when we work at the watershed level. Targeted conservation practices and good storm water management are incredibly effective tools for holding water where it falls, and slowing it down. That means a lot less water flowing destructively downstream."

The Upper Iowa River Watershed Management Authority (WMA) which is a formal partnership of counties, cities and Soil & Water Conservation Districts, is working with Northeast Iowa RC&D to develop a long-term plan for the watershed. The watershed open houses are an opportunity for the public to learn more about what's already happening in the watershed, potential projects and practices, and to give input. Coffee and light refreshments will be offered at the Cresco meeting. For more information visit or contact Megan Buckingham at Northeast Iowa RC&D at or 563-864-7112.
