The Legacy of Iowa's Bird Lady

On Tuesday, November 29th, Larry Stone visited the Cresco Public Library to tell the story of Gladys Black, Iowa's Bird Lady.  Her whole life centered around birds.  When she was young Arm and Hammer Baking Powder had bird pictures and information about that bird on their packaging.  Gladys would cut them out, study them, and collect them. Gladys grew up in a family where nature was important.  She enjoyed fishing and hunting--becoming a fine marksman.  She learned how to carve birds from wood.  After graduation from high school, she went on to study nursing.  She married Wayne Black.  Wayne died early and Gladys moved in with her mother to help take care of her mother's health needs.  She lived in Pleasantville, Iowa, and fell in love with the Red Rock area.  Gladys particularly loved the larger birds--the pelicans, the egrets, and the herons.  She wrote for the Des Moines Register and other small community newspapers in the area.  She also work and teach the young people in schools and other civic organizations.  Gladys helped care for a Snowy Owl, named Nikki, that she used to help tell the bird's story.  Gladys Black has been labeled as 'Iowa's Rachel Carson'.  Following are some pictures taken at this event.
